The United States was justified in dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki because it caused the immediate end to the war. This saved many civilian lives, as well as the lives of those in the military. This also prevented Japan from taking over Russia.
If Japan kept fighting and did not surrender than the USSR would join the war.This would make WWII last longer which would raise the death toll. If the United States decided to invade Japan instead of creating the bombs this would have caused a very bloody war in Japan. This would take five to ten times more lives than needed. Japan surrendered a little over a month after the bombing. This helped aide the end of WWII.
