History of the Bombing

Background:


       The bombs, Little Boy and Fat Man, were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th and August 9th of 1945.
       Lets go back to why America dropped the atomic bombs. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor at 7:55 in the morning.
      So a few months later, President Franklin D. Roosevelt decided to plan the making of the atomic bombs, created by J. Robert Oppenhiemer during the Manhattan Project.  About 200,000 people were involved in making the bombs but only a selected few knew what it was for. It costed approximately $2 Billion.   
     Before that could happen FDR passed away resulting in Harry Truman taking office and fulfilling what FDR had set out to do.  So on August 6th Little Boy was being carried by the B-29 Bomber known as Enola Gay to be dropped on the military compound of Hiroshima, at 8:15 a.m. taking out an estimated 90,000 people in about 43 seconds destroying 63% of the city. Japan didn't expect the bombing leaving them stunned.  The US decided to give Japan three days to say if they unconditionally surrendered or the result would be Nagasaki being bombed.  Japan didn't say if they surrendered so we sent Fat Man to the civilian city of Nagasaki on August 9th 1945.  Fat Man killed or injured an estimated 200,000 people, destroying 39% of the standing buildings.  They surrendered on August 15,1945. They called it V-J day. On September 2, 1945 Japan signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender.  Although it killed a lot of Japanese, it saved American and Japanese lives that didn't need to be lost because we would have invaded and it would have been a bloody war.
