Evidence Supporting Thesis

On December 7, 1941 the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. President Franklin D. Roosevelt felt betrayed because the Japanese tried to assure the US that they wouldn't do anything, even though the US had an inkling that they might try something.  FDR didn't announce anything.  Japan was given many opportunities to surrender, but they still kept fighting. So, the United States decided to take action.  Japan was driven by the belief that "real samurai never surrender." They didn't care if there were thousands of Japanese civilians dying.  The atomic bombs killed approximately 100,000 people in Hiroshima and approximately 70,000 people in Nagasaki. If the United States decided to invade Japan instead of dropping the atomic bombs, the casualties would be about 5 to 10 times more.  The creations of the bombs showed other countries that wanted the US gone that it isn't scared and is ready to take action if needed.  Japan was warned at the Potsdam Conference.  If Japan didn't surrender than USSR would have joined the war causing more deaths than needed.
